Starting September 1, 2027, All Ukrainian High School Students Will Have Access to the Revamped 'Defense of Ukraine' Course

З 1 вересня 2027 року всі учні українських шкіл зможуть вивчати нову програму курсу «Захист України».

The Revitalized 'Defense of Ukraine' Program

Beginning September 1, 2027, the updated 'Defense of Ukraine' subject will be introduced nationwide for all high school students across Ukraine. The curriculum includes training in first aid, drone operations, firearms handling, and crisis management skills. Currently, this course is offered in 1,027 specially equipped centers, reaching nearly 80% of senior students.

In 2024, Ukraine's Ministry of Education and Science completely redesigned the 'Defense of Ukraine' curriculum. Starting in September 2024, 10th and 11th graders began attending monthly training sessions based on the new program. Students are organized into small groups of 8 to 15 participants, which enhances the hands-on learning experience.

Investment and Nationwide Forum Highlights

Since the reform's inception, a total of 2.1 billion UAH has been allocated to develop and equip 'Defense of Ukraine' centers. Over 100 million UAH has been invested in teacher professional development. In September 2026, the second All-Ukrainian 'Defense of Ukraine – 2026' forum took place in the Zakarpattia region, featuring 19 teams competing in a practical training quest. Challenges included tactical medical assistance, firearms training, piloting FPV drones of the Tiny Whoop class, and navigating obstacle courses. The National Center of the Minor Academy of Sciences of Ukraine provided organizational and methodological support for the event.

Participants in the forum’s practical exercises and competitions included members from the 1st National Guard Corps 'Azov,' specifically the 12th Special Purpose Brigade 'Azov,' as well as representatives from the SkyFall Academy, IBIS, and L7 Simulators. The Ministry of Education and Science also drafted competition rules outlining three stages, which have undergone public consultation. Following the expansion of the updated program, students will gain deeper expertise in drone piloting, engineering, and cybersecurity.

The introduction of the renewed 'Defense of Ukraine' course in schools demonstrates the government's commitment to enhancing youth preparedness for emergencies and strengthening national security.

Given current challenges such as armed conflicts and technological disasters, this course aims to cultivate a more knowledgeable and responsible generation. Its successful implementation could mark a vital step towards building a society capable of effectively responding to crises and safeguarding its own security.
