Ukraine's Revised Drug Reimbursement List Now in Effect
Starting May 4, 2026, an updated list of medications eligible for reimbursement is now active in Ukraine. The medical guarantees program now includes original innovative drugs designed to treat cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, and chronic lung conditions. This represents a significant step toward improving access to essential treatments for patients requiring long-term care.
Newly added medications under the program include anticoagulants such as:
- Xarelto
- Pradaxa
- Eliquis
Also included are diabetes and heart-protective drugs:
- Forxiga
- Jardiance
Atorvastatin-based statins have also been added. To improve affordability of these innovative drugs, a special reimbursement model has been introduced: the government pays a fixed amount per package, while the patient covers the remaining cost. For example, a package of Xarelto 20 mg (28 tablets) costs 1,019 UAH, with the patient paying 509 UAH.
"The program now includes original innovative medications used to treat cardiovascular diseases (including prevention of strokes and thrombosis), type 2 diabetes, and chronic lung diseases."
National Health Service of Ukraine
Additionally, this initiative is expected to promote treatment adherence and reduce healthcare expenses, as "these medications are prescribed for conditions requiring long-term management and monitoring."
Expansion of the 'Affordable Medicines' Program
Furthermore, starting July 1, 2026, the 'Affordable Medicines' program will be expanded. The government has approved a resolution allowing procedures to begin for adding new drugs containing five new active substances to the program. These substances are used to treat type 2 diabetes, heart failure, and prevent thromboembolic complications.
In summary, the updated drug reimbursement list aims to improve patient access to necessary medications and ensure effective treatment of chronic diseases in Ukraine. This important reform not only enhances the quality of medical care but may also reduce the financial burden on patients requiring long-term therapy. With the 'Affordable Medicines' program expansion in July, further increases in access to vital medications are expected, positively impacting public health.
