Starting from March 2026, stricter penalties for drivers for traffic violations will come into effect in Poland. The changes relate to the points system and provide for harsher sanctions for the most dangerous actions on the road. This is reported by InPoland.
The updated points schedule, reported by moto.pl, is aimed at reducing the number of serious violations and increasing road safety. Drivers committing serious violations will more quickly approach the loss of their driving rights, as the current limit is 24 penalty points.
Strengthening penalties for dangerous traffic violations
The highest number of penalty points — 15 — will be assigned for violations that pose a direct threat to the life and health of road users. This includes, in particular:
-
driving a vehicle while intoxicated;
-
going around lowered barriers at railway crossings;
-
participating in illegal street races;
-
exceeding the speed limit with real danger to others;
-
driving a car after losing driving rights.

Changes to penalty points for other violations
The new rules will also affect less common but dangerous actions on the road. For instance, riding a motorcycle or a car on one wheel will result in 10 penalty points and a fine ranging from 1500 to 2500 zlotys. Meanwhile, for causing a traffic collision without injuries, the driver will receive 12 points. For comparison, the points for dangerous use of a vehicle have been reduced from 15 to 12.
The draft of the relevant regulation has already gone through interdepartmental consultations. The launch of the updated penalty system is planned for March 2026.
