In October, Ukrainian drivers should take care of changing summer tires to winter ones, as the temperature directly affects the car's grip on the road. Although the law does not set specific dates, the Traffic Rules require the use of tires that correspond to the weather conditions. A fine of 340 UAH is imposed for violations, and repeated violations may lead to a risk of losing one's driver's license. This is reported by UAmotors.
When to change tires
Experts recommend focusing on the temperature. When the average daily temperatures drop to +6…+7 °C, and frosts are recorded at night, summer tires lose elasticity and significantly worsen handling. Therefore, it is advisable to switch to winter tires in mid-October when the asphalt begins to cool.
For drivers planning trips abroad, it is worth considering the rules of other countries: in most EU countries, winter tires are mandatory from December 1.
What fines threaten drivers
Bill No. 43734 proposes to significantly tighten responsibility:
-
The fine for the first violation is 1700 UAH
-
Repeated violations – 3400–8500 UAH and possible loss of license
-
Current fines – 340 UAH for the first violation.
Legislators explain that tightening responsibility is meant to encourage drivers to timely replace tires and reduce the number of traffic accidents in the cold season.
Winter tires are softer and have a deeper tread, which allows better control of the vehicle on ice and snow. It is not only a matter of avoiding fines but also of safety, savings on tire wear, and reducing risks on the road.
