Kyiv Region to Enact Annual Fishing Ban Starting in 2026

У Київській області з 2026 року почнуть діяти сезонні обмеження на риболовлю.

Fishing Ban Announced for Kyiv Region

Authorities in Kyiv Region will implement an annual spring and summer fishing prohibition starting April 1, 2026. This measure is designed to protect fish during their spawning season and applies to both recreational anglers and commercial fishers. The Kyiv Fish Protection Patrol published the official notice on its website. Such seasonal bans are a common conservation tool used in many countries to allow fish populations to recover.

Ban Periods and Specifics

The duration of the fishing restrictions will depend on the specific body of water:

  • For most rivers and lakes, the ban begins on April 1.
  • On the Kyiv and Kaniv reservoirs, fishing will be prohibited from April 10 until June 20.
  • On the Desna River, the main channel will be closed from April 10 to May 30, with tributaries and associated water bodies closed until the end of June.

The new rules prohibit the use of all vehicles or motorized boats in these areas, except for vessels operated by the fish protection service and other authorized agencies. Furthermore, commercial fishing and spearfishing will be completely banned. Recreational angling will be permitted only from the shore using hook-and-line gear, with a limit of two hooks per person, or a spinning rod with a single artificial lure.

Violators will face administrative fines and, in severe cases, criminal liability under Article 249 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. Criminal charges apply when illegal fishing causes significant environmental damage. To report poaching, a 24-hour hotline operated by the Kyiv Fish Protection Patrol is available. These comprehensive measures aim to safeguard aquatic resources and restore ecological balance in the region.

The introduction of the fishing ban in Kyiv Region is part of broader environmental protection efforts to replenish fish stocks.

The initiative seeks not only to improve spawning conditions but also to highlight the ongoing problem of poaching and the critical need to adhere to environmental regulations. A key component is engaging the public to help monitor compliance, which could significantly improve the future health of the region's waterways.

The upcoming fishing ban in the Kyiv Region is part of a larger trend seen across Ukraine, as new fishing restrictions and penalties will also be enforced starting in April 2026. These measures reflect a growing commitment to environmental conservation and the protection of aquatic ecosystems, ensuring sustainable fishing practices for the future.
