Kyiv Extends Traffic Ban on European Union Avenue Through 2026 for Metro Construction

Київ продовжує обмеження руху на проспекті Європейському до 2026 року для робіт з будівництва метро.

Traffic Ban on European Union Avenue

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko has signed an order extending the traffic ban on European Union Avenue until December 1, 2026. This extension is necessary for the construction of a segment of the Syretsko-Pecherska metro line, which will include two new stations: Mostytska and Prospekt Pravdy. The total length of this new metro section, from Syrets station to Prospekt Pravdy station, will be 3.78 kilometers. This major infrastructure project is part of Kyiv's long-term plan to expand its subway network and alleviate chronic traffic congestion in the city.

According to Order No. 135 dated March 24, 2026, the temporary prohibition of vehicle and pedestrian traffic on the section of European Union Avenue from Vasylia Poryka Avenue to Svobody Avenue is due to ongoing construction. The segment from Syrets station to Mostytska station will be built using a closed tunneling method, while the section from Mostytska to Prospekt Pravdy will use an open-cut method. This latter section will involve constructing a two-tiered, rectangular monolithic tunnel.

Construction Challenges

The construction work on the Mostytska–Prospekt Pravdy segment has already encountered unforeseen difficulties. In early May, a water pipe rupture caused flooding at the site, following a similar incident on April 28. In response to these events, workers from the municipal utility company are relocating trees and shrubs from the construction zone in the avenue's park area to ensure their preservation.

The text of the order states:

"To amend Order No. 237 of the Kyiv Mayor dated March 27, 2025, 'On the temporary prohibition of vehicle and pedestrian traffic with the occupation of the roadway and sidewalk on the section of European Union Avenue from Vasylia Poryka Avenue to Svobody Avenue in connection with construction work,' as follows: in clause 1 of the order, replace the date 'April 5, 2026' with 'December 1, 2026.'"

Consequently, the traffic restrictions are now set to remain in place until the end of 2026, which will significantly impact local transportation infrastructure. While the new metro stations are intended to improve public transit and reduce strain on existing networks, the prolonged closure creates considerable inconvenience for local residents and businesses. It is crucial for city authorities to maintain clear communication and plan effective alternative routes to minimize disruption for citizens during this multi-year project.

As the city grapples with ongoing construction challenges along European Union Avenue, residents should stay informed about key traffic restrictions on major bridges in Kyiv. These developments are crucial for understanding the broader implications on the city's infrastructure and daily commutes.
