Fatalities Mount on the Romanian Border
The body of a man attempting to cross illegally into Romania was discovered near the Ukrainian border. This incident adds to a grim toll of over 70 deaths recorded during illegal crossing attempts since the start of 2022, as reported by the Western Regional Directorate of Ukraine's State Border Guard Service on Facebook. The deceased, a 26-year-old resident of the Ivano-Frankivsk region, reportedly fell ill during the illicit journey, according to his relatives. The border crossing between Ukraine and Romania, a key external frontier of the European Union, has seen increased pressure and danger since Russia's full-scale invasion.
A rapid response group located the man's body near the border. Medical examiners concluded the cause of death was heart failure. The over 70 fatalities documented since 2022 starkly illustrate the severe risks associated with these unlawful attempts. Border authorities have repeatedly warned that crossing the state border outside official checkpoints is not only illegal but also poses a direct threat to life and health.
Corruption Scheme Uncovered Within Border Service
In a separate but related development, Ukraine's National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAP) announced they have exposed a large-scale corruption scheme within the State Border Guard Service. The scheme allegedly involved smuggling cigarettes into the EU. Former and current senior officials are suspected of facilitating the illegal transport using vehicles with forged diplomatic license plates and involving relatives of Ukrainian diplomats. Border guards reportedly received 3,000 euros for each vehicle allowed to pass unimpeded. As part of the investigation, the former head of the State Border Guard Service, Serhii Deineko, was dismissed from military service, and NABU and SAP are conducting searches related to the ex-head of the agency.
