Emergency Recovery Efforts in Kyiv
Large-scale emergency recovery operations are ongoing in Kyiv following an attack on January 24th. During these efforts on January 25th, a high-altitude rescuer, Oleksandr Pytaichuk, lost his life. His death has been a profound loss for his colleagues and local residents, as he was an experienced member of the service. Ukraine's Minister of Internal Affairs, Ihor Klymenko, expressed sincere condolences to the fallen rescuer's family, emphasizing that the war claims lives not only on the front lines but also in the rear.
Rescue Personnel and Civilian Support
The emergency recovery work in Kyiv involves all units of Ukraine's State Emergency Service, supplemented by additional forces from other regions. High-altitude specialists and the special Delta unit are operating at the sites. Approximately 600 rescue workers are deployed across the capital's damaged sites, performing tasks at heights of up to 60 meters in temperatures around -10°C (14°F).
To support residents, 91 heated tents have been set up across Kyiv, with 71 located on the left bank. These tents are positioned near residential buildings housing between 12,000 and 14,000 Kyiv residents. Two large tent complexes have been established, one of which can accommodate at least 300 people. For each complex, 15 paramedic teams operate around the clock to provide immediate medical assistance.
Police presence in affected areas has been doubled, with two rescuers and one police officer on duty in each tent. The capital also has over 90 State Emergency Service heating points operational, and as of January 25th, 1,300 'Invincibility Points' are functioning. Cooperation with organizations like World Central Kitchen and the Red Cross ensures residents receive hot meals and basic aid. The Minister of Internal Affairs noted that information about infrastructure issues is being relayed to local authorities for rapid repairs to restore heat and electricity to homes.
