The Death of Serhii Lazarenko
Ukrainian soldier Serhii Lazarenko was killed in action near Huliaipole on December 6, 2025. He was 28 years old. Lazarenko was born on November 26, 1997, in the village of Mezenivka, Sumy region. He had signed a contract to serve in the military before Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022.
His Combat Path
In the spring of 2023, Serhii served as a mortarman in the fire support company of the 5th Separate Assault Kyiv Brigade. During his service, he fought in the battles on the outskirts of Bakhmut and Ivanivske, as well as along the defensive lines near the Siverskyi Donets – Donbas canal. The fighting in these areas, particularly around Bakhmut, was some of the most intense and protracted of the war.
He was wounded twice during the war. The second time, he sustained a mine-blast injury near Solodke in late October 2025. Following his recovery from this wound, he retrained and became an operator of unmanned aerial systems in a newly formed battalion of the 5th Separate Assault Brigade.
The news of Serhii Lazarenko's death was announced by Yurii Syrotiuk, a fighter with the 5th Separate Assault Regiment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and a former member of the Ukrainian parliament. Syrotiuk noted that it began to snow during the farewell ceremony for Serhii. The soldier's father, Volodymyr, recalled that heavy snow also fell on the day his son was born.
“The weather saw him off with the noble color of white. We do not say goodbye to those who died for the Homeland—we will surely meet again.”
