A Fatal Strike in Kharkiv Oblast
On May 10, 2024, Ukrainian servicewoman Lyudmyla Balabukha, known by her call sign 'Bagheera,' was killed by a Russian guided aerial bomb (KAB) during an attack in Kharkiv Oblast. She was serving with the 92nd Separate Mechanized Brigade, where she had first worked as a mortar assistant before retraining as a paramedic. The use of such powerful, precision-guided munitions has become a grim hallmark of Russia's assault on the region.
The Life and Service of Lyudmyla
Born in Abay, Kazakhstan, Lyudmyla Balabukha moved to Kharkiv Oblast at age 16. She was one of six children, with five sisters and one brother. For most of her life, she worked as a technologist at a dairy plant and later as a shop assistant. After a divorce, she settled in the village of Mala Rohan near Kharkiv. On February 26, 2022, she escaped from occupied Mala Rohan to the '1st Kilometer' market and subsequently enlisted in the Armed Forces of Ukraine in March 2022.
During her service, Lyudmyla participated in the liberation of several settlements, including:
- Kupiansk
- Petropavlivka
- Kupiansk-Vuzlovyi
- Kivsharivka
In the winter of 2023-2024, she completed a training course to operate a 'Hornet' grenade launcher. Despite being classified as 'limited fit' for service due to back problems, she continued her duties on the front line.
Lyudmyla had planned to go on leave on May 15, 2024. Her last conversation with her daughter, Anzhelika, was on May 9. Her death was officially confirmed on May 12, 2024. She was buried in the cemetery of the village of Zidky, Kharkiv Oblast. She is survived by her daughter, Anzhelika, and a granddaughter, Diana.
Lyudmyla actively studied the Ukrainian language while serving and was recognized for her dedication and professionalism. She often reflected on her service, stating:
“I am in my place here. You cannot like war, but I like serving. And when it's all over, I want to continue on this path. This is my life's calling.”
Her death is a profound loss not only for her family but for the entire nation, which will remember her heroism and courage.
This tragedy underscores not just the sacrifices borne by Ukrainian service members, but the deeply human stories behind the statistics. Lyudmyla, like so many others, fulfilled her duty despite personal hardships and physical limitations, a testament to the resilience and bravery of Ukraine's defenders. Her memory will live on in the hearts of those she left behind and in the history of a nation fighting for its independence.
