Tragedy Strikes Ukraine

Ukraine is mourning the loss of three prominent figures: decorated track-and-field athlete Ihor Bodnar, radio host Oleksandr Tynhaiev, and floorball player Yurii Orlov. Bodnar, a defender of Ukraine and an international-class master of sports, died on June 6, 2026, while carrying out a combat mission in the Sumy region. He earned a silver medal at the 2000 Sydney Paralympics in the 1500-meter run, leaving a lasting legacy in athletics.

Oleksandr Tynhaiev, a 46-year-old host and commentator for Champion Radio, passed away on June 8, 2026, due to a fishing accident. He suffered a fatal electric shock after his fishing rod contacted a high-voltage power line. Tynhaiev had been part of the Champion Radio team since its founding, contributing significantly to Ukraine’s media landscape.

Additionally, on June 6, 2026, Ukrainian floorball player Yurii Orlov was killed during a Russian military shelling of Kyiv. Orlov had been a player for the KFK club since 1996. The Ukrainian Floorball Federation expressed heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and the entire floorball community, stating:

“We received the news of Yurii’s death as a result of shelling by Russian troops with deep sorrow.” — Ukrainian Floorball Federation
