Advantages and Challenges for the West
British military analyst Michael Clarke stated that the West has an advantage over Russia in terms of wealth and most types of weapons, but is currently in the most dangerous period, being unprepared for war. The main issue, he said, is not the arsenals but the multilateral decision-making process in the European Union and NATO.
Michael Clarke, who is a professor of defense studies at King’s College London and a security and defense analyst at Sky News, emphasized that the West is 10-12 times wealthier than Russia, and together with the USA, 20 times wealthier. He noted that the West has:
- twice as many combat ships;
- two to three times more combat aircraft;
- approximately one and a half times more ground troops.
However, Clarke noted that Russia is mobilized, while the West is not.
Decision-Making Complexity
Clarke also highlighted the large number of decision-making centers in the EU and NATO.
“They have a strictly dictatorial unified government, while we have 27 governments in the EU and 30 in European NATO. Not to mention Canada and the United States, and there are a total of 32 countries in the alliance, and each makes its own decisions,”the analyst pointed out. He stressed that the situation is objectively becoming worse and more tense, and while his reasoning may seem pessimistic, he concludes weekly that the concerns are justified.
Clarke also expressed the opinion that the West is currently trying to 'pretend this will not happen.' An article from the publication 'Wave' also mentions materials about how Europe is planning the defense of the continent without America for the first time and how many years it will take for the Russian army to threaten NATO.
Michael Clarke's remarks highlight the importance of coordination among Western countries, as decision-making complexity could become a critical factor in the event of escalation of the conflict. Currently, the West has the resources to resist, but the need for clear strategic unity is becoming increasingly urgent amid rising threats from Russia. This underscores the importance of enhancing cooperation among NATO and EU member states to ensure security in the region.
