Ukraine's Path to Victory in the War Against Russia

During a discussion with students, Ukraine's Ambassador to the United Kingdom and former Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Valeriy Zaluzhnyi, outlined his vision for what victory in the war with Russia would entail. He stated that success rests on three fundamental feelings:

  • absolute security,
  • unlimited opportunities for growth,
  • restoration of territorial justice.

Zaluzhnyi emphasized that he wants to feel safe within 16 to 17 minutes after victory is declared. He also noted that Ukraine has paid an incredibly high price for its freedom. His remarks on the sense of security are accompanied by deep emotions and aspirations for a stable future.

“I want to feel that my country, my children, and my family have unlimited prospects for development. This is about a war-exhausted nation gaining a future through long-term programs and funding,” Zaluzhnyi said.

Territorial Justice and Ukraine's Future

Kyrylo Budanov, head of the Ukrainian President's Office and a Lieutenant General, also stated that any loss of Ukrainian territory is unacceptable. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed readiness for trilateral negotiations, excluding Russia and Belarus. Zaluzhnyi stressed the importance of territorial justice, drawing a comparison to personal conflicts. He remarked:

“If it turns out that in my home, a piece of my garden or my shed is taken by my neighbor, the only thing I will do when I am dying is make my son swear to reclaim both the shed and the garden.”

Zaluzhnyi's position reflects the deep aspirations of the Ukrainian people for security, development, and justice amid the ongoing conflict. These views highlight not only Ukraine's strategic goals but also the emotional dimension of the struggle for independence, which has become a key factor in mobilizing society. With the constant threat from Russia, the focus on safety and restoring territorial integrity remains central to Ukraine's political discourse.

As Ukraine navigates its path to victory, questions about post-war security remain crucial. The need for effective deterrents against potential Russian aggression after a peace agreement is highlighted by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's recent statements.
