Valerii Zaluzhnyi's Tensions and Challenges
In an interview with the Associated Press, Valerii Zaluzhnyi, the former Commander-in-Chief of Ukraine's Armed Forces, detailed conflicts with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during his tenure. He described a raid by Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) on his office in late 2022 and disagreements over the 2023 military counteroffensive. Zaluzhnyi was dismissed from his post in February 2024 and later appointed as ambassador to the United Kingdom. His removal came after months of speculation regarding strategic differences with the presidential administration.
Zaluzhnyi, 52, was appointed to lead the armed forces following Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022. Regarding the SBU raid, the service stated no search was conducted on Zaluzhnyi personally and that investigative actions were related to a separate case. The President's office declined to comment, and AP could not independently verify the details of the raid incident.
The Counteroffensive and Its Aftermath
The 2023 counteroffensive, developed in cooperation with NATO, aimed to capture the Zaporizhzhia region, reach the Sea of Azov, and isolate Crimea. Zaluzhnyi stated the plan failed to achieve its objectives, a version of events confirmed by two anonymous Western officials who also described the operation as unsuccessful. This high-stakes military campaign was a focal point of international support and scrutiny.
Following his dismissal, Zaluzhnyi was approached in the spring of 2025 with an offer of services from American political consultant Paul Manafort, which he rejected. He also signaled a readiness for open confrontation, stating:
"I will fight you and have already called for reinforcements to central Kyiv for support"- Valerii Zaluzhnyi.
