A coordinated attempt on the life of Ihor Obolensky, the commander of the National Guard corps "Khartia," was carried out on July 31. Both the would-be assailant and an accomplice were taken into custody. President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the event on social media, saying he had spoken with Obolensky after the incident. Zelensky also received an intelligence briefing on the assassination attempt from Acting SBU Chief Oleksandr Poklad.
Zelensky Vows Response
The president made clear that Ukraine would not let the attack go unanswered.
"We will certainly respond to this attempt to strike at Ukraine and at a Ukrainian commander. I thanked Ihor for his service and told him to hit the occupiers even harder," Zelensky said.Before this episode, Obolensky had been named as a possible successor to General-Major Syrskyi as Commander-in-Chief. Following the attack, Zelensky announced a special meeting of the Staff, after hearing reports from battlefield commanders.
