Gas reserves in Ukraine are at their lowest in 12 years: will it be enough for winter

The volumes of gas in Ukrainian underground storage facilities remain the lowest in the last 12 years, although the injection rates have significantly increased compared to last year.

As of August 5, natural gas reserves in Ukrainian storage facilities exceeded 10 billion cubic meters, which is 32.3% of their capacity. To pass through the heating season 2025/2026, the Ministry of Energy plans to accumulate 13.2 billion cubic meters by November 1, reports Delo.ua.

High Gas Injection Rates in July

According to the consulting company ExPro, in July 2025, Ukrainian underground storage facilities injected 1.69 billion cubic meters of gas – almost twice as much as during the same period last year. This is the highest monthly figure in the last two years.

'This year, the injection rates are quite good and significantly higher than last year. So, I think if the rates are maintained, we can accumulate even more than 13.2 billion cubic meters,' says ExPro analyst Mikhail Svishcho.

Risks and Challenges

Experts point to risks, particularly the possibility of attacks by Russians on gas transportation infrastructure, which could limit gas supplies.

'There is currently not enough means for imports. I do not know what 'Naftogaz' will use to buy 0.6-0.8 billion cubic meters of gas,' notes the director of special programs at the NTs 'Psychea' Gennady Ryabtsev.

Ukrainian underground gas storage facilities have the lowest reserve levels in 12 years, but due to high injection rates in the summer of 2025, it is planned to accumulate a sufficient amount of gas for the heating season 2025/2026. However, there are risks associated with limiting gas supplies due to the possibility of attacks on gas transportation infrastructure.
