Local Ceasefire Enacted at Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant
A local ceasefire has been established around the occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) to allow for repairs to a damaged power line. The plant's last remaining 330 kV backup power line was damaged on January 2nd. This leaves the facility dependent on a single operational 750 kV high-voltage line, significantly increasing risks to the stability of its power supply. The precarious situation highlights the ongoing dangers to nuclear safety posed by the conflict in Ukraine.
Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), confirmed that repair work will begin in the coming days. He noted that this temporary ceasefire is the fourth such agreement that has been successfully negotiated.

Developments at the Chornobyl NPP
In a separate incident, one of the power lines at the Chornobyl NPP was disconnected due to damage at a substation. Additionally, power output was reduced at another Ukrainian nuclear plant over the past weekend. Grossi announced a new expert mission to assess 10 substations, underscoring the critical importance of monitoring nuclear safety in the region amidst the ongoing war.
