Drone Strikes Cut Off Main Power at Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant

Атаки дронів призвели до перерви в енергопостачанні Запорізької АЕС.

Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in Crisis

Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) now faces a severe power shortage after losing its primary external electricity line. Since March 24, the plant has relied solely on a backup 330 kV line called Ferrosplavna-1. The main 750 kV Dniprovska line was knocked offline, triggering three separate complete blackouts of external power supply.

IAEA Efforts and Drone Attacks

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is currently negotiating with both Ukraine and Russia to establish a localized ceasefire that would allow repair crews to work safely. An IAEA team is stationed at the ZNPP but was unable to independently verify reports of drone attacks near the facility. According to available data, three drone strikes were recorded, with one attack involving up to 40 unmanned aerial vehicles.

One explosive-laden drone landed near the machine hall of reactor unit 1 but did not detonate, causing no injuries or damage. Plant officials reported the incident two days later, by which time the drone wreckage had already been cleared away.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi expressed alarm, stating that 'the presence of drones and explosives at a nuclear power plant is unacceptable, as it sharply increases the already significant risks to nuclear safety.'

Additionally, over 160 drones were detected near the South Ukraine, Chornobyl, and Rivne nuclear plants on May 13–14. The situation around the ZNPP remains tense, and future actions by the international community may determine its safety.

The power outages at the ZNPP and the drone attacks highlight a critical threat to nuclear security, not only for Ukraine but for the entire region. The IAEA is taking steps to reduce tensions, but the lack of stable electricity could lead to serious consequences. Given these multiple factors, international support and continued oversight will be crucial to preventing a disaster at the nuclear plant.

The recent incidents at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant have raised significant concerns about its operational safety. In light of the damage reported at a laboratory following a drone attack, the implications for nuclear security in the region are becoming increasingly alarming. As the situation unfolds, the need for comprehensive measures to ensure the safety of nuclear facilities is more critical than ever.
