IAEA Seeks Ceasefire for Repairs as Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant Loses Main Power

Міжнародна агенція з атомної енергії виступає за мир, щоб відновити енергопостачання на Запорізькій атомній станції.

Critical Situation at Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant

The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant has lost its connection to the main 750 kV high-voltage power line and is now operating on a single backup line. This reliance on a solitary reserve source significantly increases risks to the plant's operational safety and stability. In response, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi has announced the start of negotiations with Ukraine and Russia to establish a local ceasefire. This temporary truce is deemed essential to allow for the repair of the damaged transmission line.

Expansion of IAEA Monitoring Missions

Due to persistent grid instability and ongoing Russian shelling, the IAEA has decided to expand its monitoring missions to two additional critical substations in Ukraine. Grossi stated:

“We have initiated negotiations with Ukraine and the Russian Federation to establish a local ceasefire, which is necessary to enable repairs to the damaged power line.”
These measures aim to prevent further incidents and ensure a stable power supply for the Zaporizhzhia plant. The Zaporizhzhia facility, Europe's largest nuclear power station, has been under Russian military control since March 2022, creating an unprecedented crisis for nuclear safety.

The situation underscores the vital importance of a stable off-site power supply for nuclear facilities, especially in active conflict zones. The IAEA-facilitated talks between Ukraine and Russia could prove critical in averting a potential nuclear incident and enabling urgent repairs. Given the gravity of the circumstances, the international community continues to monitor developments closely, as any prolonged loss of reliable power could have severe and far-reaching consequences.
