NBU to introduce new ESG rules for banks: what will change by 2027

The First Deputy Head of the National Bank of Ukraine, Sergiy Nikolaychuk, stated that the implementation of ESG standards is essential for gaining access to the EU market and enhancing the resilience of the country's financial system.



The NBU found that Ukrainian banks continue to improve risk management according to ESG principles and are ready to become leaders in this area in Ukraine.



Main areas of action



  • Providing recommendations to banks on integrating ESG risk management into the overall risk management system;

  • Establishing comprehensive requirements for ESG risk management in banks and non-bank institutions over the next few years;

  • Implementing new requirements into the daily practices of financial institutions and including ESG risk management in the supervisory process.



The role of the NBU in implementing ESG approaches


The National Bank is actively collaborating with the government and the Interagency Working Group to adapt EU legislation on ESG issues. Despite the absence of national legislation, Ukraine's financial system is preparing for the implementation of ESG standards.

Sergiy Nikolaychuk called for joint efforts and consistency in achieving success in this process.



The Ukrainian banking sector is implementing ESG standards to gain access to the EU market and enhance the resilience of the financial system, despite the difficulties. The National Bank is facilitating this process and has outlined key areas of action for banks regarding ESG risk management. The integration of ESG approaches is an important step for Ukraine's financial stability and its future in the context of European integration.
