Russia has tripled its attacks on the energy system: how Ukraine avoids blackouts

Україна вдосконалює заходи для забезпечення енергетичної стабільності та запобігання відключенням електроенергії.

The Ukrainian energy system is on the brink of a critical state due to intensified attacks by Russia, but it has so far managed to avoid large-scale blackouts. According to Deputy Minister of Energy Mykola Kolisnyk, in 2022 there was only one complete shutdown of electricity supply, but the system was quickly restored and maintained under control. However, the number of attacks has significantly increased, particularly in November, when Russia used over 5200 drones and more than 200 missiles, which is significantly higher than previous indicators.

To restore damaged equipment, the Ukrainian government is actively seeking international assistance through the Ukraine Energy Support Fund. Donors provide the necessary technical equipment for the prompt restoration of energy infrastructure. The response to the situation was also shown by Estonia's Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna, calling for increased pressure on Russia and not to lower it even during the holiday period.

In turn, Ukraine's Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko emphasized that the most significant damage from Russia's attacks on December 23 was inflicted on energy facilities in the western regions of the country.
