From Passenger Jet to Artificial Reef

On January 14, 2006, a retired Canadian Airlines Boeing 737 was intentionally sunk off Vancouver Island, Canada, to create an artificial reef. The 30-meter aircraft now rests roughly 30 meters below the surface in the Strait of Georgia. Four years of preparation preceded the sinking, with volunteers spending hundreds of hours stripping oil, insulation, and other pollutants from the fuselage. Artificial reefs are increasingly used in ocean conservation to give damaged seabed environments a structure around which life can rebuild.

The location was chosen because the seafloor there was almost devoid of marine life, after decades of pollution from forestry industry waste. The plane was placed on 3-meter-high support stands, letting divers pass underneath the fuselage. Since the sinking, the site has become home to more than 100 documented species of marine organisms, including:

  • rockfish
  • cod
  • cloud sponges
  • plumose anemones
  • sea stars
  • octopuses
  • red sea urchins

Ecological Impact and Dive Tourism

Cold water and strong currents make diving in the area challenging, but divers can still enter the cabin and look out through openings left where cargo holds used to be. A memorial plaque on one of the support stands honors two World War II pilots. The same stand also carries a carved wooden mask that once decorated the nose of the aircraft.

The project has turned the sunken airliner into a popular dive site and has drawn attention to the restoration of marine ecosystems. It is part of wider efforts to increase biodiversity in regions where natural reefs have been badly damaged by human activity.

Turning an airplane into an artificial reef was an important step in confronting ecological problems linked to the degradation of marine environments.

The initiative demonstrates how creative solutions can help restore underwater ecosystems affected by human actions. It also opens up new opportunities for eco-tourism, bringing in divers and researchers while raising awareness about the need to protect ocean life.
