Man Detained in Zaporizhzhia for Evading Military Service While Disguised as a Woman

Чоловіка затримали у Запоріжжі за спробу уникнути військової служби, маскуючись під жінку.

Detention in Zaporizhzhia

A 49-year-old man was apprehended in Zaporizhzhia while attempting to avoid military conscription by disguising himself in women's clothing. This incident is part of a broader pattern where individuals have sought to dodge service or illegally cross borders by wearing female attire. Ukraine has maintained a general mobilization since the full-scale invasion began, leading to strict enforcement of conscription laws.

The man, who was already wanted for violating mobilization legislation, was detained by police after he altered his appearance with a wig and a woman's coat. He was subsequently taken to the Zaporizhzhia District Territorial Center for Recruitment and Social Support.

Other Cases of Evasion

In a separate case in the Cherkasy region, authorities detained a 44-year-old resident of Zolotonosha who was also attempting to cross the border illegally. Disguised in women's clothing and a wig, and carrying his sister's passport, he planned to cross into Romania while pretending to be mute from birth. His wife assisted in the ruse by claiming he was her sister.

Near the Ukrainian-Hungarian border in Zakarpattia, three men eligible for military service were detained, one of whom was also dressed as a woman. These cases illustrate the extreme measures some individuals are taking to avoid mobilization or flee the country illegally.

These incidents reflect a growing problem of mobilization evasion in Ukraine, which has become particularly acute during the ongoing military conflict.

Authorities continue to implement measures to control the situation and ensure compliance with mobilization requirements, which may lead to increased checks and controls at borders and in cities. Such cases also highlight the significant social and psychological pressures faced by men during wartime as they grapple with the demands of military service.

The ongoing challenges related to military conscription in Ukraine are not limited to individual evasion tactics. Recently, authorities in Vinnytsia uncovered a smuggling operation where a couple was arrested for attempting to transport conscription-age men out of the country for a substantial fee. This situation underscores the broader issues of mobilization avoidance and the lengths to which individuals will go to escape service.
