Затримано агента білоруських спецслужб, який намагався проникнути в українську військову розвідку.

Belarusian KGB Agent Apprehended

Ukrainian counterintelligence has arrested a Belarusian KGB agent who was attempting to infiltrate the country's military intelligence service. The multi-month operation culminated in the agent's detention in Kyiv. The operation was conducted jointly by Ukraine's Main Directorate of Intelligence (GUR) and the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), under the procedural guidance of the Office of the Prosecutor General.

The 35-year-old female agent has been formally charged with espionage. She had been working for the Belarusian KGB since 2015 and was dispatched to operate in Ukraine in 2020 under the cover of a journalism career. Her cover included work for the 112 channel and later for a leading Ukrainian media outlet. On orders from her handler, she traveled to an EU country for briefings under the pretense of undergoing a medical examination.

Mission and Consequences

Her mission involved gathering intelligence on Belarusian and Russian nationals fighting for Ukraine and establishing contacts with staff at the Chinese embassy in Kyiv. Ukrainian law enforcement officials stated they meticulously documented her criminal activities throughout the special operation. They ran a counterintelligence game against her, feeding her disinformation disguised as classified data.

After sufficient evidence was gathered, she was arrested. Authorities seized her smartphone and a voice recorder during the detention. The agent is now in custody and faces up to 15 years in prison with confiscation of property. According to Belsat, the detainee is Belarusian journalist Inna Kardash, born in 1991 in Minsk and a graduate of the European Humanities University in Vilnius. This case highlights the persistent threat of espionage Ukraine faces from neighboring states aligned with Russia.

The arrest of this Belarusian KGB agent underscores the ongoing threat foreign intelligence operatives pose to Ukraine's national security, particularly amid the continuing military conflict.

A critical component of this work involves gathering intelligence on potential threats from other states, which can significantly influence Ukraine's defense strategy.
