Russian Soldier Captured for Executing Ukrainian POWs in Kursk Region: Key Details

A Russian soldier responsible for the execution of Ukrainian prisoners of war in the Kursk region in October of last year has been captured by Ukrainian defense forces. A Ukrainian court has sentenced 36-year-old Russian prisoner of war Sergei Tuzhilov, who goes by the call sign 'Altai', to life imprisonment. Tuzhilov served as an assault rifleman in Russia's 69th Motor Rifle Division. This case is part of ongoing efforts to hold individuals accountable for atrocities committed during the conflict.

The execution of the Ukrainian prisoners of war occurred in October 2022 in the Kursk region and sparked widespread condemnation. Sergei Tuzhilov was later fighting on the Russian side in Vovchansk in 2024. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of justice, stating:

'The very Russian soldier guilty of shooting Ukrainian prisoners of war in the Kursk region last October has been captured. Every Russian murderer must answer for their crimes. And they will.' Volodymyr Zelenskyy

This event represents another step in the struggle for accountability for crimes committed during the war.

Significance of the Capture

The capture of Sergei Tuzhilov marks a significant step in the process of holding individuals accountable for war crimes committed during the conflict between Ukraine and Russia. Amid the ongoing war, such cases are crucial not only for delivering justice but also for providing moral support to Ukrainian society.

This case is expected to potentially set a precedent for:

  • Increased attention to crimes committed against Ukrainian military personnel and civilians,
  • Heightened international pressure on Russia regarding accountability for its aggression.
