Military Personnel Detained for Assaulting Fellow Soldier
A serviceman from the Dnipropetrovsk region has been taken into custody after assaulting a fellow soldier in front of a formation on May 1 and subsequently fleeing his unit to evade authorities. The victim, identified as Serhiy Malenko, was hospitalized and is reported to be in stable condition. Charges have been filed under multiple articles, including torture, desertion, and violation of military regulations.
The attack occurred on May 1 when the perpetrator, acting on his own initiative, organized a formation and singled out a soldier he held a personal grudge against. He then proceeded to beat him. The victim lost consciousness from the repeated blows. Afterward, the attacker bound his hands with plastic zip ties and, once the soldier regained consciousness, continued the assault. Attempts by other troops to intervene and stop the violence were aggressively suppressed by the assailant, who even ordered one soldier to record the incident on a phone.
Details of the Incident
The event took place within the 155th Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in Dnipro. Following the beating, the attacker left the unit's deployment site without authorization and went into hiding for several days. His location was eventually identified by officers from the State Bureau of Investigation, the Military Law Enforcement Service of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and other law enforcement agencies.
The serviceman faces suspicions under:
- Part 1 of Article 127 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (torture)
- Part 4 of Article 408 (desertion)
- Part 2 of Article 406 (violation of military regulations)
These charges carry penalties of up to 12 years in prison.
As for the victim, Serhiy Malenko, he became the Ukrainian champion in kyokushin karate in 2009. This incident has sparked widespread public outcry, and video of the disgraceful act was published by most Ukrainian media outlets earlier this week.
This case highlights serious issues within military units and the urgent need for effective oversight of soldier conduct. It is crucial that such incidents are met with a proper response, and that relevant authorities conduct investigations and implement measures to prevent future occurrences. The apprehension of this serviceman could mark a significant step toward restoring discipline and order in the army.
The recent incident involving a soldier's assault highlights ongoing issues within military ranks, drawing parallels to other serious cases of misconduct. For instance, the recent court order for the detention of fighters in a kidnapping and assault case further underscores the urgent need for accountability and reform in the armed forces. As these events unfold, they raise critical questions about the safety and conduct of military personnel.
