Air Quality Monitoring System Failure in Kyiv

Air quality monitoring stations in Kyiv have experienced operational failures due to Russian missile and drone attacks and subsequent power outages. The city's Department of Environmental Protection and Climate Change Adaptation reports that during blackouts or unstable power supply, the monitoring equipment malfunctions, which can lead to air pollution data becoming temporarily unavailable. A similar system failure was also recorded on January 25.

Kyiv is currently under emergency power restrictions following massive attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure. Over 800 apartment buildings in the capital remain without electricity. As of January 25, 1,400 'Invincibility Points' are operational in the city, providing residents with essential services during crises. During emergency repair work on a power facility damaged in the January 24 attack, rescue worker and high-altitude specialist Oleksandr Pytaichuk was killed.

Current Air Quality Readings

According to data from one monitoring station at 20 Shchusev Street, the overall Air Quality Index (AQI) is 38, indicating a low level of pollution. The concentrations of pollutants recorded at this stationary post are as follows:

  • TSP — 23.9 µg/m³ (MPC – 500 µg/m³)
  • PM2.5 — 22.1 µg/m³
  • PM10 — 23.5 µg/m³
  • Nitrogen Dioxide — 43.1 µg/m³ (MPC – 200 µg/m³)
  • Carbon Monoxide — 563.9 µg/m³ (MPC – 5000 µg/m³)
  • Ozone — 19.1 µg/m³ (MPC – 160 µg/m³)
  • Nitric Oxide — 11.4 µg/m³ (MPC – 400 µg/m³)

Reliable air quality data is critical for public health, especially in a wartime capital. The ongoing conflict has made Ukraine's energy grid a primary target, directly impacting essential civilian monitoring systems. These disruptions highlight the vulnerability of environmental safeguards during war and the importance of maintaining stable power for systems that provide vital public health information and enable a response to ecological threats.
