Men's National Basketball Team of Ukraine Claims Commanding Victory

Ukraine's men's national basketball team delivered a decisive win over Denmark, finishing 99:69 in the first stage of qualifying for the 2027 FIBA World Cup. The game was played on the road in Denmark. With this result, the Ukrainian squad advanced to the next round, holding a record of two wins and two losses overall.

Coach and Player Reactions

Head coach Ainars Bagatskis emphasized the team's rigorous preparation, noting they anticipated a tough contest.

“We prepared very seriously. It might sound a bit strange, but we expected a hard game because it's not easy to come here just three days after playing high-quality basketball and beating a strong team like Georgia,”
the coach stated.

The first quarter proved challenging, but Ukraine eventually found its rhythm.

“The first quarter was difficult. We were a bit asleep, but then we woke up and got the job done,”
Bagatskis added. The team adapted to the opponent's defense, and the coach highlighted that “when a team makes the right decisions and finds quality shots, it always pays off.”

Team leader Oleksandr Kovliar shared his thoughts on the game: “My answer is short. The best part is when I score 30 points, and there's a teammate who also scores 30.” He noted that advancing to the next round is the top priority, though he still remembers the earlier loss to Spain.

The match was not without setbacks. Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk suffered a knee injury in the second half, but Bagatskis reassured that it was minor: “It was just a scratch. Nothing serious.” Artem Kovalev was unavailable for the game due to an internal team matter.

Overall, Ukraine delivered a strong performance, and the coach believes the team played smarter and more aggressively on defense starting in the second quarter.

“From the second quarter onward, we played smarter, as well as more physically and aggressively on defense,”
Bagatskis summarized.

This victory marks a key step for Ukraine in the World Cup qualifying campaign, as the team now has two wins and remains in contention for further progress. Standout players like Oleksandr Kovliar showcased their productivity, which could serve as a foundation for future successes. Bagatskis' coaching strategy also proved crucial in shaping the game plan, underscoring the importance of team preparation.
