Ukraine's National Team Secures World Cup Playoff Semifinal Spot with Victory Over Iceland

Збірна України здобула перемогу над Ісландією та вийшла до півфіналу плей-оф чемпіонату світу.

UEFA Playmakers Project Concludes in Ternopil

A year-long cycle of the UEFA Playmakers project for girls has wrapped up at School No. 11 in Ternopil. The initiative, implemented by the Ukrainian Football Association in partnership with the Ternopil Region Football Association and supported by the Ternopil Football Academy, was led by coaches Serhii Kharchuk and Iryna Lohinska. The training sessions employed a unique play-based methodology, using storylines from Disney animated films like 'Incredibles 2' and 'Encanto' to engage the participants.

National Team's Crucial World Cup Qualifying Win

In a separate but significant development, Ukraine's men's national football team secured a vital 2:0 victory over Iceland in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier. The match, held in Warsaw, was a must-win for Ukraine to keep their qualification hopes alive. The decisive goals came in the second half:

  • Zubkov scored in the 83rd minute
  • Hutsuliak sealed the win in the 90+3rd minute

This result was crucial as both teams entered the match level on points in the standings.

This victory propels Ukraine into the World Cup qualification playoff semifinal, where they will face Sweden on March 26, 2026. Should they advance, the team would meet the winner of the Poland vs. Albania match in the playoff final. Ukraine must win two consecutive playoff matches to secure a spot at the 2026 World Cup. This playoff path is a common route for European nations that finish second in their initial qualifying groups.

The UEFA Playmakers project aims to introduce girls to football by creating a fun, friendship-focused environment. Its core objectives are:

  • introducing a novel, imaginative coaching approach that uses creativity as a tool for football skill development
  • enhancing the life skills of young girls and fostering a lifelong connection to the sport

These events highlight the parallel growth of football in Ukraine, from grassroots development to the international stage. The Playmakers project represents a strategic investment in the future of women's football, while the national team's success in a high-stakes qualifier provides inspiration across the country. Such achievements can galvanize interest in the sport at all levels, which is particularly significant for Ukrainian society during challenging times.
