Ukraine Secures Historic Silver Medal at Rugby Sevens Tournament in Spain

Ukrainian Rugby Sevens Team Achieves Notable Success

Ukraine's men's rugby sevens squad claimed silver at the Costa Blanca Rugby Sevens tournament, held in Benidorm, Spain. The event was part of the team's training camp and preparation for the European Championships. During the group stage, the Ukrainian side impressed with two wins against the United States and Finland, suffering only one loss to France.

In the playoff rounds, the Ukrainian rugby players defeated China 21-17 and edged out Pyrenees-7s 21-19. However, they fell to Portugal 22-5 in the final, ultimately finishing as runners-up.

It is worth noting that rugby sevens will feature at the 2027 European Games in Istanbul, scheduled for June 16-27, and at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, set for July 14-30.

Ukrainian Basketball Team's Performance

Beyond rugby, Ukraine's national basketball team has also been active internationally. In the fourth round of qualifying for the 2027 FIBA World Cup, Ukraine lost to Spain 78-64. Quarter scores were 16-9, 12-12, 24-22, and 26-21.

In earlier qualifying matches, Ukraine secured victories against:

  • Denmark (88-71)
  • Georgia (79-92)

Against Georgia, Oleksandr Kovliar was the top scorer with 31 points in 37 minutes. Additionally, Oleksandr Lypovyi contributed 13 points, while Viacheslav Bobrov recorded a double-double with 11 points and 15 rebounds. These results highlight the active participation of Ukrainian athletes in international competitions and their drive for new achievements.

The accomplishments of Ukraine's rugby and basketball teams on the global stage reflect the growing competitiveness of Ukrainian sports.
