Ukraine’s Strong Showing at the 2026 European Wrestling Championships
At the 2026 European Wrestling Championships held in Tirana, Albania, Ukraine’s national team claimed three bronze medals in Greco-Roman wrestling. Meanwhile, four Ukrainian women’s freestyle wrestlers advanced to their respective finals, underscoring a standout performance by the country’s athletes at this elite competition.
The Greco-Roman squad’s success was highlighted by three bronze finishes:
- Vladlen Kozliuk earned bronze in the 97 kg weight class, securing his second European bronze medal of his career.
- Yaroslav Filchakov also took bronze in the 87 kg division, despite losing to Olympic medalist Turpal Bisultanov.
- Mykhailo Vyshnyvetskyi added another bronze in the 130 kg category.
Unfortunately, Oleksandr Hrushyn missed out on a medal after falling to an Armenian opponent in the bronze final. In the team standings, Ukraine finished fifth, trailing behind Azerbaijan, Turkey, Georgia, and Armenia.
Women’s Wrestling Finals
The women’s freestyle team added to the excitement by sending four athletes to the finals. Oksana Livach, defending her title in the 50 kg category, overcame Russian wrestler Yelyzaveta Smirnova in the semifinals. She will face Turkey’s Evin Demirhan in the gold medal match.
Anastasiia Alpieieva is competing for Ukraine in the 76 kg weight class, while Liliia Malanchuk and Mariia Vynnyk have reached their first senior European Championship finals. The decisive bouts for top honors are scheduled for April 23, 2026.
