War-Related Environmental Damage Surges by $58.8 Billion: New Report from Ukraine's Eco-Inspectorate

Environmental Toll of Armed Aggression

Between April 17 and April 24, the total environmental damage caused by the Russian Federation's armed aggression increased by 58 billion 828 million 335 thousand hryvnias, according to a new report from the State Environmental Inspectorate of Ukraine. These figures highlight the severe ecological consequences of the ongoing conflict, which continues to devastate natural resources across the country.

Breakdown of Key Damage Categories

The bulk of the losses falls into the following categories:

  • Soil contamination and land littering – 58 billion 777 million 732 thousand hryvnias;
  • Air pollution – 30 million 972 thousand hryvnias;
  • Burning of oil, petroleum products, and gas – 7 million 337 thousand hryvnias;
  • Forest fires and damage to other vegetation – 21 million 198 thousand hryvnias;
  • Fires involving other objects and waste – 2 million 437 thousand hryvnias;
  • Pollution and littering of water bodies and marine waters – 12 million 056 thousand hryvnias;
  • Damage to protected areas and natural reserve sites – 7 million 575 thousand hryvnias.

These numbers underscore not only the enormous economic costs but also the long-term ecological challenges that could threaten biodiversity and public health. Restoring the damaged natural resources will require significant effort, making environmental safety a critical concern amid the protracted war.
