Hope for Restarting Peace Negotiations
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed optimism about resuming peace negotiations. He stated that Russia is being given the opportunity to choose the format for discussions, and emphasized that Ukraine expects security guarantees after the war ends, as well as membership in the European Union. These remarks were made during a joint press conference with Honduran President Nasry Asfura.
Zelensky also noted that European and American leaders see a shared path forward in the context of peace talks.
“I believe the rounds of negotiations will resume. The question is in what format. Europeans see their own track. Europeans want this to be a joint track—Americans and Europeans. And everyone also supports the track we most recently proposed. I believe in bilateral negotiations, but partners must be involved,” Zelensky said.
Diplomatic Efforts and Readiness for Talks
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed Russia’s readiness to hold talks regarding Ukraine, but stated that the country would continue launching strikes on Ukrainian territory.
“Russia is ready for negotiations on Ukraine, but will continue to strike Ukrainian territory,” Peskov emphasized.
Additionally, European Council President António Costa instructed his administration to open a diplomatic communication channel with Russia. European nations, in coordination with Ukrainian authorities, are working on a strategy to bring Russia into the peace process. These actions reflect a surge in diplomatic efforts amid the ongoing conflict in the region.
President Zelensky’s statements about restarting peace talks highlight Ukraine’s commitment to a diplomatic resolution of the conflict.
