President Zelensky Meets EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held talks with Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, focusing on several key issues:

  • financial aid for Ukraine;
  • a €90 billion loan from the European Union;
  • strengthening sanctions targeting the Russian Federation.

Zelensky received firm commitments to broaden the EU’s sanctions lists, emphasizing how crucial these measures are to safeguarding Ukraine’s security.

Financial Aid and Sanctions Intensification

President Zelensky highlighted Ukraine’s compliance with the terms tied to the EU loan, aimed at addressing the country’s budget shortfall. He expressed gratitude for the EU’s lending decision:

“We appreciate the EU’s approval of the €90 billion loan. Ukraine is fulfilling its obligations linked to this support to cover the budget deficit as much as possible. Our teams will also explore additional financial assistance options.” – Volodymyr Zelensky

During the meeting, Zelensky also raised the issue of intensifying sanctions against Russia. He warned that any signals suggesting a rollback of sanctions on certain Russian oligarchs would be counterproductive and dangerously misguided amid ongoing Russian assaults. The Ukrainian leader stressed the importance of maintaining and expanding these punitive measures:

“I thank Ursula for her willingness to work on adding more Russian individuals to the EU’s sanctions lists. Such actions bring us closer to a just peace and assured security.” – Volodymyr Zelensky

Beyond his discussion with von der Leyen, Zelensky met with French President Emmanuel Macron in New York. Their talks covered security matters, continued support for Ukraine, and ballistic missile defense programs. Zelensky also indicated openness to direct negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin, signaling a readiness to pursue diplomatic solutions.

Additionally, the World Bank has granted Ukraine $841 million backed by guarantees from the Canadian government, marking another significant step toward stabilizing Ukraine’s finances amid the ongoing war. These developments illustrate robust international backing for Ukraine’s struggle to maintain sovereignty and territorial integrity.

This series of high-level meetings highlights the critical role of global support for Ukraine as it faces military aggression from Russia. Ukraine’s firm stance on extending sanctions and securing financial aid from the EU and other international bodies remains vital for the country’s stability. The infusion of new financial resources is expected to improve Ukraine’s economic outlook and strengthen its defense capabilities.
