Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky Meets with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan
President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine recently held talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Istanbul. Their discussions focused on expanding energy cooperation, advancing joint industrial and economic initiatives, and ensuring safe navigation in the Black Sea. They also addressed preparations for a potential tripartite summit involving the United States and Russia.
Zelensky announced that Ukraine anticipates an increased delivery of generators and other energy equipment from Turkey as early as next week.
“We have already met with representatives of Turkish energy companies today, and we expect an increase in support, including more generators and other energy equipment, next week,” stated Volodymyr Zelensky.
Free Trade Agreement and Economic Collaboration
The conversation also covered the free trade agreement between Ukraine and Turkey, which came into effect on October 1, 2026. Signed in 2022, this pact unlocks new business opportunities for both nations. President Erdogan emphasized the significance of this milestone for their bilateral economic and trade relations:
“The enforcement of the free trade agreement from October 1, signed by our countries in 2022, marks a crucial step for our economic and trade partnership,” Erdogan remarked.
Security concerns in the Black Sea were another key topic, given Russia's ongoing aggression since 2014. Zelensky highlighted Turkey’s consistent support for Ukraine’s sovereignty:
- Russia’s aggression has steadily worsened the security situation in the Black Sea since 2014.
- Turkey remains a steadfast supporter of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
- Steps are being taken to protect safe maritime navigation in the Black Sea.
The meeting also included a session with Ukrainian and Turkish business leaders, signaling a boost in economic ties between the two countries. The planned tripartite meeting among Ukraine, the US, and Russia, scheduled for early November 2026, was a significant agenda item.
“I sincerely thank everyone for organizing this platform for dialogue among all partners and colleagues. We are eager for our discussions to yield concrete results,” Zelensky said.
This encounter between Zelensky and Erdogan underscores the critical role of Ukraine-Turkey relations, particularly concerning regional stability in the Black Sea. Their talks on energy collaboration and the free trade agreement reflect both nations’ determination to deepen economic connections amid ongoing external challenges. The expected increase in Turkish energy equipment deliveries could also help alleviate the energy crisis triggered by the conflict in Ukraine.
