Talks Focus on Financing Ukraine’s Defense
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held a discussion with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen centered on supporting Ukraine’s defense budget. The primary topic was securing financial resources for Ukraine’s military needs. Zelensky highlighted ongoing efforts to finalize solutions addressing defense funding challenges and expressed gratitude to von der Leyen for her attention to Ukraine during her annual address to the European Parliament.
Plans for Defense Projects Unveiled
During their meeting, the proposal to allocate remaining funds from the SAFE program toward new defense initiatives benefiting both Ukraine and the European Union was put forward. Zelensky emphasized Kyiv’s willingness to engage with additional security proposals moving forward.
“The idea to utilize leftover SAFE program funds for fresh defense projects for Ukraine and the EU is timely and essential. It’s critical to bring this to fruition,” emphasized Volodymyr Zelensky.
Both leaders agreed to continue their discussions in person in New York during the upcoming United Nations General Assembly. The European Commission has already provided Ukraine with financial support for air defense systems, missiles, and ammunition. Zelensky underscored that they reviewed necessary steps to bolster Ukraine’s defensive resilience and thoroughly examined the issue of defense financing, reflecting ongoing active collaboration.
