Discussion of security guarantees and peace plan

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, discussed with former U.S. President Donald Trump the issue of security guarantees for Ukraine, the duration of these guarantees, as well as the details of the peace plan. During the meeting, which took place on December 28 at Mar-a-Lago, Zelensky expressed the need to extend the guarantee period to 50 years, while current documents provide for 15 years with the possibility of extension. Trump confirmed that he discussed 20 points of the peace plan with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Zelensky noted that the state of martial law in Ukraine will end only when security guarantees with monitoring are received. He emphasized the importance of reaching an agreement, as

“the U.S. says that security guarantees will not last forever if an agreement is not reached today”
— Volodymyr Zelensky. Additionally, he also discussed with Trump an economic support package for Ukraine.

The need for strong guarantees

In the context of negotiations with Russia, Zelensky remarked:

“For us, this is not the first time when Putin says one thing but does another”
— Volodymyr Zelensky. This indicates the necessity of a careful approach to peace negotiations and the implementation of promises that may be made by the Russian side. Therefore, it is important for Ukraine to have strong security guarantees that would ensure stability in the region.

The discussion of security guarantees, the peace plan, and economic support underscores the importance of international cooperation for Ukraine in the current security situation.

Zelensky's meeting with Trump marks a significant step in seeking stable security guarantees for Ukraine, especially in light of ongoing aggression from Russia. The extension of guarantees to 50 years may indicate Ukraine's desire for a long-term strategic partnership with the U.S., which is critical for ensuring its sovereignty and territorial integrity. Additionally, economic support may help Ukraine cope with the challenges arising from the conflict and strengthen its position on the international stage.
