President Volodymyr Zelenskyy Calls for Strengthened Air Defenses at NATO Summit

In his nightly video address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stressed that the primary takeaway from the NATO summit—scheduled for July 7-8 in Ankara—must be a significant boost to Ukraine's air defense capabilities. He confirmed ongoing discussions with the U.S. administration regarding licenses to produce Patriot systems and underscored the critical need to develop Europe's own manufacturing base for such weapons.

'The NATO summit is happening in the coming days, along with other formats. This must be one of the key outcomes—air defense. That is, if NATO still means anything to its allies. Europe must have its own sufficient capacity to defend against all types of threats, including this one—Russian ballistic missiles.'

Additionally, a meeting on the Freya air defense system program is planned during the summit. Just prior, on the night of July 2, the Russian military launched a massive attack on Kyiv, using drones, ballistic and cruise missiles, as well as Zircon hypersonic missiles. The assault struck 28 locations, confirmed 22 fatalities, and damaged 131 structures. President Zelenskyy visited the impact site in the Darnytskyi district, where three people died. Over 100 individuals sought assistance, and 17 were rescued.

To effectively intercept 70 ballistic missiles, Ukraine requires at least 140 Patriot missiles.

'European production—whether here in Ukraine, or together with partners—would naturally also support the United States in operations when needed. We strongly hope for a positive response from President Trump to protect lives.'

These events and statements highlight the urgent need to bolster Ukraine's defense capabilities amid ongoing aggression.

Ukraine's Security and International Support

Zelenskyy's remarks at the NATO summit reflect growing anxiety over Ukraine's security in the face of Russian aggression. By emphasizing the importance of air defense, Ukraine is seeking to rally international support to strengthen its defensive posture. During the summit, NATO representatives are expected to discuss not only air defense issues but also other aspects of military cooperation, which could shape regional security strategies.

As Ukraine seeks to enhance its defense systems, President Zelenskyy has also indicated progress in negotiations for a significant drone agreement with the EU expected within six months. This potential deal aligns with his calls for stronger air defenses and highlights the urgency of international collaboration in bolstering Ukraine's military capabilities.
