Address by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy
In his evening address marking the 1,552nd day of the war, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy declared that strengthening air defense is the nation’s top priority. He stressed that protecting the skies remains Ukraine’s most critical objective amid ongoing aggression. During his report, Zelenskyy noted that Ukrainian positions on the front lines have grown stronger due to the courage of the people, technological innovations, drones, mid-strikes, and long-range sanctions.
International Support and Diplomatic Efforts
Ahead of his address, President Zelenskyy held talks with the leaders of France, Norway, and Finland. He expressed gratitude to French President Emmanuel Macron and other partners for their support. The president highlighted a global shortage of antiballistic missile systems caused by the conflict with Iran, stating:
“Antiballistic systems are now in global shortage because of the war with Iran. But we must, we must find options.”
Zelenskyy also pointed out that progress with the United States on expanding antiballistic system production had stalled for some time. However, he noted that Ukraine is working to accelerate the production of these systems in Europe. In this context, the Ukrainian president underscored the need for U.S. leadership:
“The PURL program is working, and we are grateful for that. Europe is helping us financially. But U.S. leadership is also very much needed.”
Additionally, Zelenskyy announced new diplomatic initiatives with U.S. representatives. He discussed priorities with Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko and members of the parliamentary mono-majority, noting that this year’s results are greater than before. He also emphasized that “this war must be ended, and ended with dignity.”
This address underscores the urgent need to bolster Ukraine’s military capabilities, particularly in air defense, amid the ongoing war and external threats. Support from international partners, especially the United States, is critically important for ensuring the country’s defense capacity, reaffirming the importance of the president’s diplomatic efforts to secure necessary resources and technologies.
As Ukraine continues to prioritize its air defense capabilities, the diplomatic landscape remains dynamic. Recently, President Zelenskyy addressed the potential for negotiations following Putin's indications of readiness for talks. This development may influence the ongoing military strategies and international support efforts that are crucial for Ukraine's defense initiatives.
