Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke about the most challenging issues that arise during negotiations for a peace agreement. According to him, serious challenges relate to territories, control over the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, funding for reconstruction, and technical aspects of security guarantees.
Zelensky noted that there has been significant progress in the negotiation process in the U.S., but the toughest moments are still ahead. He explained that currently, the Americans are engaging in dialogue with Russia based on a 20-point plan that corresponds with Ukraine's vision.
Achieving peace and contentious issues
«I believe that we should not seek alternatives to cooperation with the U.S. All other possibilities must remain in question - whether they can influence Russia», Zelensky noted.
The President also remarked that other countries, such as those in the Middle East, Europe, and Canada, can assist in resolving the conflict. However, he expressed outrage that China is currently not interested in joining the peacekeeping process in Ukraine.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Ukraine has managed to avoid some contentious issues during negotiations, but there are five key aspects on which Ukraine and Russia have yet to reach an agreement. These include: territories, NATO membership, troop numbers, the status of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, and the language regime.
The armed conflict mentioned by the president in Ukraine compels adaptation to the complex challenges during negotiations for a peaceful settlement of the situation. Currently, the most problematic issues are control over territories, funding for reconstruction, and security, and in a number of key aspects, Ukraine and Russia must seek compromises. Although some progress in negotiations has already been achieved, the toughest challenges are still ahead, and they must be addressed to achieve peace in the region.
