Why the Coming Months Could Decide Ukraine's Path
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the upcoming winter will be a decisive period for his country, potentially leading either to peace negotiations with Russia or to an escalation of the conflict. Speaking at a press conference alongside Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin, Zelensky addressed key issues surrounding the war and its possible resolution. He revealed that discussions with U.S. officials Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff have explored avenues to end the hostilities. According to Zelensky, Washington has developed several proposals and is ready to present them to both Kyiv and Moscow.
Potential Trilateral Talks on the Horizon
Zelensky noted that a trilateral meeting could take place in the United States within days or weeks.
“Yesterday there was a conversation with Jared and Witkoff... We discussed the possibilities for a meeting,” he added.The president believes it is crucial to hold this meeting before autumn. He also pointed out that Russian President Vladimir Putin is surrounded by two factions: one advocating for an end to the war due to worsening economic conditions, and another pushing for continued military action.
In Zelensky’s view, Russia is preparing for additional mobilization and an expansion of the conflict.
“Today we talked about threats and real challenges that are emerging right now, on the eve of autumn, as Putin prepares new strikes against Ukraine,” he said.At the same time, the president acknowledged that the implementation of resilience plans ahead of winter has been unsatisfactory.
To improve the situation, Zelensky offered Mykhailo Fedorov the position of Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine for Military Innovation, emphasizing the need to coordinate innovations with the leadership of the Ministry of Defense. He also expects proposals from the new commander-in-chief, Mykhailo Drapatyi, regarding the renewal of the army’s personnel. “Undoubtedly, Drapatyi and Khmara will have to fulfill the main task today after a long and exhausting war,” Zelensky stressed.
Additionally, the president highlighted threats to maritime logistics, noting that no vessel has been able to enter a Ukrainian port due to attacks on ships. “We understood this several months ago. They will continue to increase these attacks,” he stated. As a result, the coming months will be critically important for Ukraine as it seeks to stabilize the front line and advance toward negotiations.
Zelensky’s remarks underscore the urgency of diplomatic efforts amid growing threats from Russia and the need to strengthen Ukraine’s defense capabilities. The potential trilateral meeting with the United States could open new pathways for a peaceful resolution, but the realities of ongoing combat and the internal political dynamics in Russia complicate the process.
