President Zelensky on the Impact of US Midterm Elections

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed optimism that the Democratic Party’s success in the 2026 US midterm elections will lead to increased American support for Ukraine, intensify pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin, and accelerate the start of peace negotiations. The midterms began on November 3, 2026, encompassing all 435 House of Representatives seats, one-third of the Senate, and 39 gubernatorial races across the United States.

Early projections suggest the Democrats are poised to secure a Senate majority and come close to controlling the House. According to Reuters, the Democrats may claim 54 out of 100 Senate seats and 227 out of 435 House seats, surpassing the 218 needed for a House majority.

Broad Bipartisan Backing for Ukraine

In an interview with German broadcaster ZDF, Zelensky highlighted Ukraine’s bipartisan support within the US political landscape.

“We have backing from both parties. I also appreciate the Republicans, but the Democrats have clearly voiced their commitment to supporting Ukraine and providing aid,” he said.
He further emphasized the critical need to restore strong ties between the United States and Europe, which have weakened in recent years.
“Restoring the connection between the US and Europe is essential. Without these relationships, it is very difficult to stand up to Putin,” Zelensky added.

The Ukrainian president believes that a rise in American aid could influence Putin’s calculations regarding the war. “If Congress moves forward with substantial financial or military assistance, as Europe is currently demonstrating, this will send a strong message to Putin. It may cause him to reconsider whether continuing the conflict is worthwhile, especially as support for Ukraine grows,” Zelensky explained.

Against the backdrop of the US midterms, Ukraine is hopeful that enhanced American support will be a decisive factor toward ending the war. The Democratic Party’s anticipated victory could significantly shape US foreign policy, given its historical stance on security and aid. Additionally, growing bipartisan consensus in Washington may help stabilize the region and deter further Russian aggression.

As the political landscape shifts, the implications of the midterm elections extend beyond domestic concerns. The potential for increased support for Ukraine could reshape international dynamics.
