Presidential decree on the Day of Military Communication and Cybersecurity

President Volodymyr Zelensky signed decree No. 713/2026 on August 6, 2026, which establishes an annual Day of Military Communication and Cybersecurity of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, to be celebrated on August 8. The decree was published on the official website of the President of Ukraine. This document cancels the previous decree of February 1, 2000, No. 154/2000, concerning the Day of Military Communication.

The celebration of the Day of Military Communication and Cybersecurity solidifies the official name of the holiday, which became possible after the establishment of the Command of Military Communication and Cybersecurity in 2020. It is worth noting that as of January 1, 2022, these forces acquired the status of a separate branch of the military.

“Honoring the courage and heroism of the soldiers of the Military Communication and Cybersecurity of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, demonstrated in the struggle for freedom, independence, and territorial integrity of Ukraine, and to promote the development of military traditions, I decree: to establish in Ukraine the Day of Military Communication and Cybersecurity of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, to be celebrated annually on August 8.”

Historical significance of August 8

August 8 holds a special significance, as on this day in 1920 in Kyiv, based on the Kostiantyniv Military School, the training of military communication specialists began at the Second Kyiv Military Engineering Courses. Thus, the new decree not only updates traditions but also emphasizes the historical roots of military communication in Ukraine. Celebrating this day will become an important element in the development of military traditions and in honoring the contribution of military communicators to the country's defense capabilities.

The introduction of the Day of Military Communication and Cybersecurity reflects the recognition of the importance of these forces in modern security conditions, especially in the context of armed conflicts and hybrid threats. It also reflects the growing role of cybersecurity in the overall context of the country's defense, as cyberspace becomes an important battleground. Celebrating this day may help raise public awareness of the significance of military communication and cybersecurity and strengthen national identity through honoring history and traditions.
