Sanctions Against Aggressors

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has signed decrees enacting decisions by the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) to impose sanctions. These measures are a key part of Ukraine's ongoing effort to counter Russian influence and aggression. The sanctions target:

  • Former oligarch Dmytro Firtash;
  • Individuals in his circle and companies under his control;
  • People's Deputy Viktor Medvedchuk;
  • Taras Kozak and eight associated companies.

Furthermore, a separate decree enforces extensive sanctions against companies servicing the Russian tanker fleet, as well as individuals responsible for cyberattacks and propaganda.

Sanction Synchronization and International Cooperation

The NSDC's decisions also involve synchronizing sanctions with the United Kingdom and extending those sanctions whose terms had expired. In January 2023, President Zelenskyy stripped Taras Kozak of his Ukrainian citizenship based on materials from the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and the State Migration Service. Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that:

'all entities linked to Russia and its structures deserve to be blocked.'

He also emphasized that:

'long before the start of the full-scale Russian aggression, these individuals chose Russia for themselves, and therefore, war. We will continue to counter every such entity.'

In a related international move, the Council of the European Union has extended sanctions against 47 Russian individuals and 15 legal entities until October 9, 2026. This coordinated action highlights the global effort to isolate Russia economically. Ukraine thus continues its active work to strengthen sanctions pressure on individuals and structures supporting Russian aggression.

These decisions demonstrate the continuation of Ukraine's strategic course in combating Russian aggression and supporting the international coalition aimed at intensifying sanctions pressure. Cooperation with international partners, such as the United Kingdom and the European Union, underscores the importance of coordinated actions in countering threats to national security. The situation regarding sanctions is a crucial component of Ukraine's overall strategy amid the ongoing conflict in the east of the country and geopolitical instability in the region.
