President Volodymyr Zelensky's CNN Interview

In a recent interview with the American news network CNN, President Volodymyr Zelensky voiced support for any temporary halts in the conflict while expressing skepticism about the role of major powers as mediators between Ukraine and Russia. Emphasizing the importance of saving lives, he stated:

'I believe any pause in the war is positive, because it means you are not losing people.'
He added, 'If you can save lives, that is always wonderful.'

Zelensky also announced the signing of a security agreement, the Drone Deal, with Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. He further stressed that

'lasting peace is the best way to end the war, but if that is not possible at the moment, any pause is excellent.'
He expressed doubts about influential nations acting as effective intermediaries, noting: 'I am not sure that influential countries can serve as mediators. If it is mediation, he does not feel guilt.'

Call to Global Leaders

Zelensky urged world leaders, including President Trump, President Xi, and Prime Minister Modi, to take active steps to halt the conflict. 'Together, we must stop Putin. What does it mean to be a great leader? It means ending the war through diplomacy,' he emphasized.

The interview also addressed the costs of military equipment. The President noted that Shahed drones range in price from $80,000 to $130,000, while they can be destroyed using an interceptor costing $10,000, rather than a missile costing $3 to $4 million. 'A Shahed can cost between $80,000 and $130,000. It will be taken down not by a $3-4 million missile, but by a $10,000 interceptor,' Zelensky explained.

He expressed pride in Ukraine's potential to implement the agreement and thanked the United States for its support.

Zelensky's remarks underscore the priority of preserving life amid the conflict and highlight a strategic approach to peace negotiations. His skepticism toward major powers as mediators points to the complexity of international relations and the need for more active engagement from global leaders in resolving the war. The security pact with Arab states reflects Ukraine's drive to bolster its defense capabilities and explore new avenues for security during wartime.
