Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on an Energy Truce

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has thanked the United States for its attempts to stop Russian attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure. He revealed that discussions concerning an 'energy truce' took place during talks in Abu Dhabi. This statement was made near the end of the 1436th day of the full-scale war. Zelenskyy emphasized that negotiations involving American and Russian representatives occurred in Abu Dhabi, where critical issues, including the proposed energy ceasefire, were on the agenda.

Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine is prepared for meetings and decisions, and expressed hope that international partners will be highly effective in securing a lasting peace.

'Our negotiation team is in contact almost every hour. We are communicating with our partners—with the American side—regarding truly effective formats and genuinely necessary results.' - Volodymyr Zelenskyy

The President conveyed his appreciation to the American side for its efforts during this critical period and expressed hope for their success in ensuring a halt to the assaults on Ukraine's energy grid.

The White House's Stated Position

The head of the White House, Donald Trump, has also commented on the situation. He personally appealed to Russian President Vladimir Putin, requesting that he refrain from shelling Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities for a week while severe cold weather persists.

'I personally asked Putin not to shell Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities for a week while the intense cold lasts. He agreed to do that.' - Donald Trump

According to Zelenskyy, the situation at energy facilities and in cities remains tense, and the tangible outcomes of this diplomatic activity should become apparent in the coming days. These developments underscore the vital role of international diplomacy in resolving the conflict and ensuring stability in Ukraine, particularly during harsh winter conditions when energy infrastructure is critically important.

The talks in Abu Dhabi could prove pivotal in achieving a temporary ceasefire, which would allow Ukraine to prepare for further challenges. The response from international partners, especially the United States, will serve as a key indicator of support for Ukraine during this difficult period. The destruction of energy systems has been a central feature of Russia's winter warfare strategy, aiming to inflict maximum hardship on the civilian population.
