Video Shows Attack on Syzran Refinery
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has released video footage of a strike on the Syzran oil refinery in Russia, a facility situated more than 800 kilometers from Ukrainian territory. The video was shared on Facebook. The Syzran refinery is part of Rosneft’s Samara refining cluster, which also includes the Kuibyshev and Novokuibyshev plants.
Located in the Samara region, this refinery has been repeatedly targeted by Ukrainian drones. It sustained significant damage in the spring and summer of last year, with the most recent attack occurring just one month ago. On April 18, the Syzran refinery halted crude oil processing due to equipment damage, including the shutdown of its AVT-6 primary oil refining unit. That unit has a capacity of 17,100 tons per day and accounts for 71% of the plant’s total output.
Impact of Drone Strikes on Russian Refining
As a result of these drone attacks, most major refineries in central Russia have either suspended operations or reduced production. The combined capacity of facilities that have halted processes exceeds 83 million tons per year—roughly 238,000 tons per day. This represents about a quarter of Russia’s total oil refining capacity. These plants supplied more than 30% of Russia’s gasoline and approximately 25% of its diesel fuel.
Zelensky stated: 'Another long-range sanction against Russian oil refining, and we continue this direction. This time, the Syzran refinery, more than 800 kilometers from our border.'
Local residents report that one of the refinery’s processing units is on fire. The president expressed gratitude to the soldiers of the Unmanned Systems Forces and the Special Operations Forces for their work.
These strikes on Russian oil refineries signal a shift in Ukraine’s wartime strategy, specifically aimed at reducing the enemy’s fuel production capabilities. Attacks on such facilities can significantly impact Russia’s energy security, as they supply a large share of domestic fuel consumption. Overall, these actions may increase pressure on the Russian economy and enhance the effectiveness of Ukrainian military operations.
These recent strikes are part of a broader strategy targeting Russian oil infrastructure. For instance, a similar operation was confirmed by Zelensky against a refinery located 700 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. This ongoing campaign highlights Ukraine's commitment to disrupting Russia's oil production capabilities.
