Volodymyr Zelensky's Address on the 1,593rd Day of War

On July 5, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky used his evening address to alert the nation to an impending large-scale Russian attack, based on intelligence gathered by Ukraine’s security services. The warning came just before the NATO summit scheduled for July 7–8 in Turkey. He urged citizens to stay vigilant and heed air raid sirens, expressing deep concern over the potential threat to civilian lives.

'This is typical of Putin—right after America’s Independence Day and just before the NATO summit in Ankara. Russia wants to inflict more evil and kill people. Please take care of yourselves and pay attention to air raid warnings.' Volodymyr Zelensky

His remarks underscore the gravity of the situation and the urgent need for Ukrainians to prepare for potential Russian aggression.

Zelensky also stressed the critical importance of supplying Ukraine with missiles for the Patriot air defense system. 'Any delay in providing missiles for our air defense, for Patriot systems, means lost lives and only encourages Russia to keep fighting,' he said. The president emphasized that the world possesses sufficient quantities and quality of air defense systems, but protecting lives in Ukraine requires decisive action from international partners. 'We don’t need Patriot missiles sitting in warehouses right now—they need to be deployed with Patriot units, in Ukraine,' he added.

Additionally, Zelensky held a phone call with French President Emmanuel Macron, during which they discussed security issues and continued support for Ukraine amid the ongoing Russian threat. As the war grinds on, Ukraine’s leader called for swift measures to safeguard its citizens and preserve their lives.

This address reflects the mounting tension ahead of the pivotal NATO summit, where new measures to support Ukraine are expected to be discussed. The repeated appeals for Patriot missile supplies highlight Ukraine’s critical need for advanced air defense capabilities to counter the threat of fresh Russian assaults. Beyond domestic precautions, Ukraine is actively seeking international backing to ensure the safety of its people.

As the situation escalates, it is crucial to understand the context of President Zelensky's warnings. Just weeks prior, he had expressed similar concerns regarding a potential large-scale Russian offensive, highlighting a pattern of aggression that demands attention.
