Warning About a New Russian Strike
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky warned about the likelihood of a new massive Russian strike on the night of January 9. He also reported on the consequences of previous shelling, noting that the situation with energy supply remains complicated. As of January 8, new hits on energy and the civilian sector were recorded, which led to significant complications in electricity supply.
The State of Energy Supply in Ukraine
Zelensky reported that energy supply has already been restored in the Zaporizhzhia region, but in Dnipro, Kryvyi Rih, Nikopol, and Pavlohrad, work is ongoing around the clock. Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia regions were left without power after a massive attack by Russian drones on the evening of January 7, resulting in more than a million consumers being left without electricity.
To improve the situation, Zelensky introduced a state of emergency for utility services. He also instructed the government to assist local authorities by maximally supporting all involved services. As part of the measures taken, the president agreed with the Prime Minister to prepare decisions that would allow during these days for non-critical institutions, including regular offices, to let people stay home. These recommendations also apply to schools and other educational institutions.
The president's statements indicate the seriousness of the situation with energy in Ukraine, which remains vulnerable during winter due to constant shelling from Russia.
Volodymyr Zelensky
The introduction of a state of emergency for utility services and recommendations for educational institutions reflect the government's efforts aimed at protecting the population and ensuring safety amid possible escalation of military actions. The dynamics of events indicate the need for readiness for new challenges that may arise as a result of aggression from Russia.
