President Volodymyr Zelensky’s Evening Address on June 20
On the evening of June 20, President Volodymyr Zelensky issued a stark warning in a video address: Russia is preparing a massive strike against Ukraine. He urged Ukrainians to take air raid alerts with the utmost seriousness, stating plainly that “the Russians have readied themselves for a large-scale attack.” His message was clear—citizens must prioritize their own safety.
Earlier that same day, Russia launched drone attacks on the Kyiv region. In the Boryspil district, strikes hit their targets, hospitalizing a 40-year-old man with smoke inhalation injuries. In the Vyshhorod district, three residents were wounded. One man suffered burns to his arms and legs, along with a shrapnel-induced leg fracture. A woman sustained shrapnel wounds to her arms and face, as well as bruises to her thigh and shin. Another woman was diagnosed with a concussion.
Just days before, on June 15, Russia again struck Ukraine, with Kyiv bearing the brunt of the assault. A direct hit on the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra—a UNESCO World Heritage site—triggered a fire on its grounds. The blaze engulfed the roof of the Dormition Cathedral, though sacred relics and liturgical items were successfully evacuated. The Ukrainian Orthodox Church’s information and education department issued a statement confirming the strike on the cathedral, while Deputy Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko assured that the cathedral would be rebuilt. The Church of the Savior at Berestovo reopened to visitors starting June 17.
“The Russians are not stopping the war, even though all proposals for peace—real formats, real opportunities—have been on their table for a long time. Putin must choose diplomacy and a genuine peace.” Volodymyr Zelensky
Zelensky also underscored the importance of diplomatic efforts. He reiterated that the offer for a Ukraine–Russia meeting remains on the table, calling it a critical step toward ending the war through peaceful means.
These latest developments signal a dangerous escalation in the conflict, with renewed threats of Russian attacks on civilian infrastructure. The president’s call for heightened vigilance reflects the gravity of the situation and the urgent need for public caution. At the same time, Zelensky’s continued openness to negotiations highlights Ukraine’s persistent pursuit of a diplomatic resolution, even in the face of ongoing Russian aggression.
In light of the escalating tensions and recent attacks, it is crucial to understand the broader implications of Ukraine's military strategy. For instance, President Zelensky has confirmed targeted strikes against Russian facilities, which he believes are essential to intensify pressure on Moscow. This approach reflects a commitment to not only defend but also proactively disrupt enemy operations.
